caught in a streetcar dream
without an emergency brake
in the gloaming
among empty beer
bottles shreds of packing-
paper, puddles of vomit
confetti and plastic
seats too upsetting
to be sat on:
she was Spanish
(all in black from her
stockings to her
mantilla). Shoeless and with
her plait twisted round her head
a la Carmen alone again
(Ash Wednesday).
Impregnated by the foul
breath of a soldier,
whose outing had
gone wrong, she stood
in the last carriage feeling
seasick and you had to wonder
frankly how she would
ever get out of there.
